For the finest indoor air quality and most beautiful flame picture possible, we recommend a direct vent stove of fireplace.  Direct Vent appliances are the best option for those with breathing problems such as asthma.  Most folks don't know that a vent free gas appliance produces moisture into the household air in the combustion process.  In fact, a set of vent free gas logs produces as much as one gallon of water in an eight-hour burn.  This moisture can increase problems for those with breathing and lung problems, and may even put enough moisture into the home that sheetrock can be damaged.  Also, in today's airtight homes, it almost becomes necessary to crack a window to get adequate performance from a vent free gas appliance.

Gas fireplaces and stoves have a sealed combustion chamber that uses outside air for their combustion and exhausts to the outside as well.  Their only real disadvantage to a direct vent gas fireplace or stove is that they cost more upfront than vent free appliances.  Home indoor air quality will be the best with direct vent though.
